The preseason is officially over for the New England Patriots, but the end of the summer has yet to bring with it any clarity on the team's situation at quarterback. Following the team's 22-20 win over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, Bill Belichick was asked if he has come to a decision on who'll be his starting quarterback to begin the regular season between Cam Newton and Mac Jones. According to the head coach, the jury is still out.

"No," he said when asked if he was ready to name a starter. "We still have a lot of decisions to make."

While Belichick didn't divulge his plans under center for the Week 1 opener against Miami, all signs do point to Cam Newton ultimately being the starter. Throughout the summer, the veteran has continued to receive the first-team reps behind the projected starting offensive line and has started every single preseason game this summer, including Sunday's win over New York. In those appearances, Newton completed 14 of his 21 passes (66%) for 162 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Newton's solid performance over that stretch does appear to be enough to fend Jones off for at least the start of the season. That said, New England's first-round rookie has certainly shown progress. He finished his preseason completing 36 of his 52 throws (69%) for 389 yards and a touchdown.

"I'm here to play any role that I can play and help any way I can," Jones said when asked what his expectations are regarding his role for the opener. "I am going to be ready whenever my time comes."

The Patriots will begin the 2021 regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.
