Bills GM Buddy Nix says 'time's now' to trade up for QB in draft
Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix says the "time's now" for the team to make a move in the draft to find a quarterback.
Winter is coming. And with it comes the season of misinformation, when various NFL teams start floating a lot of junk about whether they're interested in certain players. Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix, apparently, has no interest in these games.
Nix hopped on the radio Friday morning and said the "time's now" for Buffalo to move up in the draft and get a quarterback.
"Let me say this: I think there's a time that, in the era that you're in and the development of your team, there's a time when you can move up a round to take a quarterback," Nix said, per Tim Graham of The Buffalo News. "And I think the time's now for us."
Subtle, eh? And certainly a compliment to incumbent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
"I mean, if a guy's there -- I keep saying that, and there'll be one out there -- if the guy's there, then I think we'll target -- as I've said before -- drafting a good quarterback," Nix said. "We need a good, young quarterback, and we're going to do our best to get him."
Buffalo does need a good, young quarterback. Fitzpatrick clearly isn't the answer, even if that makes Buffalo's foolish decision to sign him to a $59 million contract last year even more inexplicable than before.
Here's the problem: this quarterback class isn't that good. There's no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III coming out this season. There are lots of options, like West Virginia's Geno Smith, USC's Matt Barkley, Arkansas' Tyler Wilson, Florida State's E.J. Manuel, and N.C. State's Mike Glennon, to name a few.
But those options might not be worth an overpay in the draft, and there should very much be a question if Nix and the Bills, who are already regretting the contract they gave to a questionable "franchise quarterback" in Fitzpatrick last year, are capable of properly evaluating the guy they need and efficiently acquiring him in the draft.
Particularly when Nix is making it clear how desperate Buffalo is for that guy.
