Bills hire former Jets DC Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator
The Bills have hired former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine as their defensive coordinator. AFC East shots fired.
Pettine's contract expired at the end of this season and he declined to have it renewed, despite having worked for, or with Rex Ryan (the lone man to survive the Jets' postseason housecleaning) since at least 2002, when both were with the Ravens.
New Bills coach Doug Marrone recently said he wanted a defensive coordinator with NFL experience and Pettine, who interviewed in Buffalo along with Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, absolutely fits the bill.
Marrone gets an assistant with defensive coordinator experience at the NFL level, a coordinator who's had great success at that level, and he hurts a division rival in the process. Don't expect Ryan to be happy about the move.
"Mike thinks it's best that he go to a different team as a defensive coordinator," Ryan said Tuesday at his postseason presser. "I wish him all the best, unless he goes to Buffalo. But I love Mike and I respect him."
In terms of yards given up, the Jets have ranked as a top-10 unit in all four years under Pettine as coordinator. That's a little misleading since everyone knows Ryan runs the defense, but it's not like Pettine doesn't have an intimate knowledge of Ryan's tendencies and playbook.
He does, and that means the Bills do now, too.
