Bills' Mario Williams undergoes left wrist procedure
Bills defensive end Mario Williams had a wrist procedure, according to the team.
When the Bills signed Mario Williams to a $100 million deal before the 2012 season, no one could have imagined the nightmare his season would become. He was quickly under pressure for a lack of performance, has picked up just 3.5 sacks and was at the center of an injury-report controversy.
Now, according to the team, Williams underwent a procedure on his left wrist earlier this week. Williams recently said the wrist injury could be causing his poor play. At the time, we noted it was odd that Williams was never on the injury report; that led the NFL to investigate.
“The update on Mario is he had a procedure done to relieve some discomfort in his wrist and we expect him back for practice this week,” said coach Chan Gailey. “That’s all I know at this point.”
Williams isn't expected to miss any game action.
“They told me what happened and said he’ll be ready next week,” Gailey said. “He’ll be at practice next week. That’s what I understand. That’s what I was told."
The Bills are on their bye week. But even if they weren't, Williams' absence might not matter much: Buffalo ranks 31st in yards per game allowed in the NFL, 31st in points allowed per game and is giving up 6.4 yards per play, tied for the second-highest total in the NFL.
He didn't name any names, but it doesn't really matter. Watch any of the Bills games and you see a team that's not capable of stopping anyone on defense. Having Williams on or off the field hasn't made a huge difference so far.
