Bills QB Kevin Kolb tweaks knee after slipping on mat
Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb is day-to-day after suffering a freak injury during practice on Saturday. Kolb slipped on a rubber mat that separates two of the Bills' practice fields.
Kevin Kolb's first year in Buffalo almost ended before it started thanks to a rubber mat. Kolb slipped on a mat during practice on Saturday and hurt his knee, coach Doug Marrone said. The Bills use rubber mats to cover asphalt that's in-between their practice fields.
"Kevin slipped on his way transferring from field-to-field. He bumped his knee and he'll just be day-by-day," Marrone said after practice.
According to the Buffalo News, Kolb knew he had tweaked something as soon as he slipped: he put his arm around trainer Bud Carpenter and threw his helmet in frustration.
Although Kolb's day-to-day, Marrone think he'll be back on the field in no time if he's physically capable, "The one thing I do know about Kevin, he is a tough son of a gun," Marrone said. "He'll get back out there quickly if it's up to him."
Kolb is locked in a training camp battle with rookie E.J. Manuel for the starting quarterback job, meaning Kolb's injury will mean more reps for Manuel. Marrone was asked on Saturday, how Manuel reacted to getting more first team reps in practice.
"The one thing you look at is how he transitions into that and you may look around to the team," Marrone said. "I thought he transitioned very well. He had a good day today."
Marrone also announced that wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who injured his hamstring on Thursday, will be out at least one week, "We’re going to make sure we work hard to get him back as soon as we possibly can," Marrone said. "He’s going to be out for a while and what I mean by a while is it’s going to be at least a week and after that I’ll probably come out with something and see where we are by then."
Johnson has led the Bills in receiving in each of the past three seasons.
