Brian Mitchell: Redskins special teams 'totally sucked' vs. Cowboys
The Redskins stunk vs. the Cowboys Sunday night, and former Washington great Brian Mitchell pins some of the blame on special teams and coach Keith Burns.
The Redskins and good special teams used to be a thing.
After all, this is the franchise that produced the first -- and only -- kicker to win the MVP award.
The unit once featured Chip Lohmiller, who starred in this video, where he takes on a challenge from Pete Stoyanovich for a quarter pounder with cheese.
It also once featured Brian Mitchell, return man extraordinaire.
His resume includes the following:
- NFL all-purpose yards: Second
- NFL total special teams touchdowns: Second
- NFL punt-return TDs: Third
That's my way of saying, he's qualified to make this next point.
“Special teams, they took about 25 steps back,” Mitchell said. “I said that when you have two weeks to prepare for a team, you have to come out with the best scheme, offensively, defensively and special teams. And I’ll say this: Keith Burns, you are a problem right now, because you can’t seem to get your guys to play for you. The one thing that every coach has to have -- great coaches -- they have to have the ability to get people to buy into what they’re trying to present. And at this point, they’re not buying into one damn thing that you’re presenting."
The name Keith Burns may ring a bell. Maybe you remember him from his days wedge-busting with the Broncos. Or maybe you remember him from Sunday night, not helping his special teams unit.
That odd flag on Burns wasn't the worst of the night though. The Cowboys return man, Dwayne Harris, racked up 222 total yards, scoring on an 86-yard punt return. He also had a 90-yard return that set up a score. Conversely, the Redskins' longest return of the night was 20 yards.
The Redskins have a lot of problems, and while special teams isn't a third of the game, the unit isn't carrying its weight this season. What could solve this? A bye week, you say, Mr. Mitchell?
"So as I look at this right now, they need another bye, to try to get him and his crew up to par. Because offense is up and down. The defense stepped up today. Everybody, give the defense their credit. But special teams totally sucked tonight."
