Browns trade Colt McCoy to 49ers for draft picks
The Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Colt McCoy to the 49ers. The are sending McCoy and a sixth-round pick to San Francisco for a fifth- and seventh-round draft pick.
After only three seasons, the Colt McCoy era is officially over in Cleveland.
The Browns have been looking to dump McCoy since signing free agent quarterback Jason Campbell last week. Campbell and Brandon Weeden are expected to compete for the starting job in Cleveland, which left McCoy as the odd man out.
McCoy, Cleveland's third round draft pick in 2010, started 21 games for the Browns over the past three seasons and went 6-15 in those starts. Cleveland didn't have much faith in McCoy and there was no more evidence of that than last April when the Browns selected Brandon Weeden with the 22nd overall pick in the draft.
The trade should actually be good news for McCoy. Instead of toiling away in Cleveland with an uncertain future, McCoy will now join a 49ers team where he has a legitimate shot of being the team's No. 2 quarterback in 2013.
San Francisco has been looking for a backup quarterback since trading Alex Smith to Kansas City. Smith's departure left Scott Tolzien as the only the only other quarterback on the roster besides starter Colin Kaepernick.
On the Browns end, the chance to get anything in exchange for McCoy was a good thing for Cleveland. Had the Browns been unable to trade McCoy, they may have ended up releasing the veteran and getting no compensation.
