The San Diego Chargers are set to re-sign kicker Nick Novak to a 4-year deal, according to the National Football Post's Joel Corry. The contract is worth $6.6 million overall and includes a $1.5 million signing bonus for the 31-year-old kicker.

However, as the San Diego Union-Tribune points out, Novak can't sign the deal until Tuesday because that's the earliest a player with a minimum benefit salary in 2012 can be signed.

The contract will provide some security for a player that's never spent an entire NFL season with one team. Novak played in five games with both the Cardinals and Redskins in 2005. He spent part of 2006 with the Redskins before being released in December of that year. Novak was then out of the league for a season before latching on with Kansas City in 2008.

After leaving the Chiefs, Novak spent some time in the UFL before turning up in training camp with the New York Jets in 2011. The Jets ended up cutting Novak, a move that ultimately worked out for the veteran.

Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding tore his ACL on the opening kickoff of the 2011 season and San Diego brought in Novak to replace him. However, Novak was cut by the Chargers last August when Kaeding beat him for the starting job in training camp. Novak was then brought back into the fold after Kaeding injured his groin in practice in September.

Novak converted on 18 of 20 field goals for the Chargers last season and was perfect from inside 50 yards. Novak's 90-percent conversion rate ranked eighth in the league and was the third highest in team history.

With Novak now signed for the next four years, the Chargers may want to think about putting a bathroom on the sideline.
