Chip Kelly latest NFL coach to dismiss University of Texas rumors
First-year Eagles coach Chip Kelly also reportedly a 'prominent' name on the Longhorns' list. Turns out, he's not interested.
The candidates for the University of Texas coaching job might not actually include every head coach in the NFL but it sure seems that way. Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin got name checks (neither were interested) and first-year Eagles coach Chip Kelly was also reportedly a "prominent" name on the Longhorns' list. Turns out, he's not interested either.
“I understand you have to ask the question, but I’m not involved in any jobs [that are vacant],” Kelly said Monday, via CSNPhilly.com's Geoff Mosher. “I’m the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and I’m going to prepare for the Bears, we’re going to prepare for the Cowboys after that. Hopefully, we have an opportunity to go to the playoffs and I plan to be here for a while.”
Kelly isn't sure why he's often at the center of speculation when it comes to coaching jobs.
“I really don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t to talked to anybody. It’s just speculation. I havent spoken to anybody, nor will I speak to anybody.”
It's worth pointing out that Kelly is subject to an 18-month show-cause penalty from the NCAA should he return to the college ranks.
But until the next rumor surfaces, Kelly remains the coach of the 8-6 Eagles, currently atop the NFC East. Asked whether he views himself as more a college or pro coach, Kelly joked, “I consider myself a pro coach eight times this year, and six times I haven’t.”
