When the Colts host the Steelers on Thursday, they're going to be in an extremely awkward situation: Their punter has thrown just as many regular-season passes as any other quarterback on their roster over the past two years.

Fittingly enough, that punter, Pat McAfee, will be serving as the Colts' emergency quarterback on Thanksgiving Day. With Andrew Luck (concussion) officially ruled out, the Colts will be starting backup quarterback Scott Tolzien.

After that, things get dicey. As pointed out by Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, McAfee will be the No. 3 quarterback against Pittsburgh.

Maybe McAfee should just be the starter. Tolzien is in his first year with the Colts and has thrown only one regular-season pass since the beginning of the 2014 season, the same as McAfee. The Colts punter threw a pass in a game that season.

McAfee has thrown more passes than the man who will be serving as the Colts No. 2 quarterback on Thursday, Stephen Morris. Morris was called up from the practice squad Wednesday and has never thrown a regular-season pass.

Basically, if the Steelers beat up on the Colts' quarterbacks, we could see McAfee.

Yes, McAfee is technically the third-string quarterback for every game, but this time it's different. Luck is a smart, experienced quarterback who rarely leaves a game with an injury, so the odds of McAfee playing are extremely low when Luck starts.

On Thursday though, McAfee will be playing behind two inexperienced quarterbacks and it would conceivably only take one small mistake for either player to get knocked out of the game.

So what kind of plays would Colts coach Chuck Pagano call if he had to play McAfee?

"If we ever get to that ... I don't even wanna think about it, to be honest with you," Pagano told the Indianapolis Star earlier this year.

Sounds like they would go with a lot of runs.
