Cowboys re-sign DE Anthony Spencer to one-year deal
Anthony Spencer will be spending at least one more season in Dallas after signing a one-year contract with the team on Saturday.
Spencer only played in one game last season after undergoing mircofracture surgery on his left knee in September. The hope in Dallas is that Spencer will be ready for training camp in July, but that's not a given. According to ESPNDallas.com, there's still an 'uncertainty' about whether or not Spencer will be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around.
Woy wouldn't put a timeframe on when Spencer might be ready play either, saying only that he probably won't be ready for a few months. "From what the doctors are telling us, he should be ready to go by preseason and regular season," Woy told the Dallas Morning News in late March.
The microfracture surgery was Spencer's second surgery on the knee in two months. Spencer underwent surgery in July and recovered quickly enough that he was able to play in the Cowboys' Week 2 game against Kansas City, the only game he played in all season.
Spencer was given the one-year franchise tag by the Cowboys before the 2013 season after tallying a career-high 11 sacks in 2012. If Spencer returns to his 2012 form, that could lessen the impact of the Cowboys losing DeMarcus Ware. Ware, who led Dallas in sacks in two of the past three seasons, signed with Denver in March.
As for Spencer, he won't be the only injured franchise player trying to get healthy in Dallas. Defensive tackle Henry Melton, who was tagged by the Bears in 2013, signed with the Cowboys in March after missing most of last season with a torn ACL.
The 2014 season will be Spencer's eighth in Dallas. The 30-year-old has been with the Cowboys since they selected him with the 26th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.
