Cowboys VP Stephen Jones: Sean Payton's situation 'has nothing to do with us'

Ever since the news that Sean Payton might not be under contract after 2012 emerged, the chatter on his possible departure to Dallas has been, as the kids don't like to say, hot and heavy.

But Cowboys VP Stephen Jones shot down any notion that his team might be interested in Payton on Monday, saying that Payton's situation "has nothing to do with us."

"That has nothing to do with us," Jones said on 105.3 the Fan in Dallas. "He’s the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, although he’s suspended, and that has nothing to do with us."

As's Jason La Canfora reported on Monday night, the Saints will have the ability to negotiate a new contract with Payton during his suspension, which will make a departure from New Orleans particularly unlikely. If Payton wanted to bounce, he'd need to avoid signing a contract between now and the Super Bowl and then hope a gig he wanted opened up and remained open.

There's no guarantee the Cowboys gig will even be available anyway. Jones kind of reaffirmed that notion when he said that he and his father, Cowboys GM and owner Jerry Jones, hadn't had "any serious discussions" about making a change with Jason Garrett as head coach.

"No, we haven’t. We haven’t had any serious discussions about it," Jones said. "We’re always with Jason and always talking about things. How do we get better? How do we improve? …

"We discuss a lot of things internally. I’m not saying what."

Oh. Well, that's not exactly a full-blown ringing endorsement, now, is it? Not that Jones should be piling on to Garrett's bandwagon anyway. The Cowboys are 3-5 and are struggling at the end of games. They've got the hapless Eagles next, and a loss could change just how serious those discussions become.
