With two days remaining before his first game in 333 days, Dak Prescott has given the Cowboys some extra spending money. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback had $6.25 million of his 2021 base salary converted into a signing bonus. The move gives the Cowboys an additional $5 million in cap space for the 2021 season. Dallas entered the day with just over $4.2 million in cap space.

Prescott was one of several notable NFL players to convert part of his base salary into a signing bonus just before the start of Week 1. New Titans receiver Julio Jones had $14 million of his salary converted into a signing bonus. The move freed up $11.2 million in cap space, via ESPN's Field Yates and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Here's a look at several other base salaries that were recently converted into signing bonuses.

  • Giants CB Logan Ryan has most of his $5.5 million on his salary converted. Ryan, who signed with the Giants last offseason, was named one of the team's captains over Labor Day weekend.
  • Bears TE Jimmy Graham has $5.825 million converted, creating $4.66 million in cap space.
  • Raiders DE Carl Nassib has $2.51 million converted, creating $2.008 million in cap space.

Each NFL team was given a base salary cap of $182.5 million for the 2021 season. Entering Tuesday, the Jaguars led the league in cap space with about $30.5 million, according to Over The Cap. The Panthers were second with just under $22 million in cap space, followed by Denver ($18.4 million), Washington ($14.5 million), Los Angeles Chargers ($12.9 million), and Cincinnati ($12 million). The Falcons, Rams and Giants were in the red, with the Giants being $6.2 million over the cap.

The salary cap is expected to jump up to $208.2 million in 2022, $225 million in 2023 and $256 million in 2024.
