For the second time this season, the Miami Dolphins have fired a coach after a blowout loss to the New York Jets. The Dolphins announced Monday that offensive coordinator Bill Lazor was relieved of his duties after the Dolphins fell 38-20 to New York in a game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated.

Quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor will replace Lazor as Miami's play-caller. The Dolphins' offense received a two-week bounce after the firing of former head coach Joe Philbin back in Weeks 6 and 7, but has gone back to struggling to put points and yards on the board ever since.

Dolphins Offense
WEEK POINTS PASS YARDS RUSH YARDS TOTAL YARDS
1-4 16.3 245.5 69.3 314.8
6-7 41.0 254.5 214.0 468.5
8-12 19.4 239.4 60.4 299.8

Lazor was credited with helping quarterback Ryan Tannehill take a step forward last season, but Tannehill has seemingly regressed quite a bit this year. Additionally, Miami's efficient ground game from last season (second in Football Outsiders' rush offense DVOA) has all but disappeared with the exception of that two-week stretch immediately after Philbin was fired.

Considering the head coach was already fired early in the season, it shouldn't be all that surprising that other coaches are following him out the door, but the fact that it happened later in the year and not at the same time as the initial firing is a bit unusual. Still, we should probably expect the Dolphins to have an all-new coaching staff by the time they take the field next season.
