Pat White, a former Dolphins pick out of West Virginia whose stint there was brief, is back working out for NFL teams after ending his baseball career, and the Redskins intend to sign him pending a physical and the usual checkups.
White, who entered the league at a time when read-option football was not accepted, did not fit Miami's wildcat scheme and left the team shortly after arriving. He had a good workout for the 49ers last week, who also espouse read-option philosophies, and informed the Giants that he would not be visiting there after the Redskins' interest intensified, sources said.
The Giants are not a scheme fit for him. Had he made their team, he would be more of a gadget guy and scout-team quarterback when they faced read-option teams like the Redskins and Eagles, to name two from their division.
In Washington, with starter Robert Griffin III expected to be limited through the preseason due to his recovery from knee surgery, White has the potential to get meaningful snaps in the offseason and during exhibition games. At this stage, getting some film out there at the pro level would be imperative for him.
For a player who has been out of the league this long to cancel one visit in favor of another visit is generally a pretty strong indication that the team that he actually travels to has made it clear they are looking to sign him. The Redskins are very high on their backup, Kirk Cousins, who also shined as a rookie, and they have flirted with bringing back Rex Grossman as well. But this scenario looks like the best option that White will be able to find. Getting into a facility as soon as possible is key as well, given how long he has been away from the game.
