Falcons announce WR Julio Jones is out for the season
The Falcons announced on Wednesday that wide receiver Julio Jones will miss the remainder of the 2013 season after fracturing his foot against the Jets on Monday night.
If the Atlanta Falcons are going to turn around their 1-4 season, they're going to have to do it without Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones will undergo surgery on his fractured foot on Monday and miss the remainder of the 2013 season, the team announced on Wednesday.
"Unfortunately, Julio's appointment with the doctor today confirmed our initial findings," coach Mike Smith said in a statement. "He is scheduled to have a season-ending procedure on [Oct. 13]."
It was revealed on Tuesday that Jones had fractured his foot in Atlanta's 30-28 Monday night loss to the Jets. Jones wanted to get a second opinion on the foot before undergoing season-ending surgery and he got that opinion from Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. Anderson confirmed on Wednesday that the foot was indeed fractured and would need surgery.
Jones went to Anderson because of his familiarity with the doctor. Anderson is the same specialist who performed Jones' foot surgery in 2011 after it was discovered at the NFL Scouting Combine that Jones had a fractured foot.
Losing Jones is a big blow to the Falcons offense, not only is he Atlanta's leading receiver, but he leads the entire league in receptions (41) and is second only to Saints tight end Jimmy Graham in receiving yards. Through Week 5, Graham's 593 receiving yards were 13 more than Jones' 580.
Before the 2013 season started, the Falcons receiving corps was viewed as one of the team's strengths, now it's turned into a nightmare. Not only is Jones out, but receiver Roddy White could be out for multiple games too after suffering a hamstring injury against the Jets.
