Running back David Wilson, the Giants' 2012 first-round pick, is not only out for the 2014 season with a neck injury, but has been advised to never play football again. On Wednesday, he spoke emotionally and eloquently in what amounted to a farewell press conference.
“I’ll be looking at my teammates this year and forever, wishing them the best,” Wilson, 23, said, according to the New York Daily News. “And every time I watch a Giants game or a football game and see people play that I actually had a chance to meet, I want to see them try to be great. Because it can be taken away. So when they go on the field I want to see them, every Sunday or Thursday or Monday, I want to see them guys be great, see them push themselves.
“That’s where my joy will come from.”
Wilson began to tear up as he spoke.
“These are tears of joy, man,” he said. “Don’t for a second you all think that I’m pitying myself or sad, because I got to live my dream. ...
“These are tears of joy because as I speak I realize how much people have helped me along the way. When you push the pause button you can look at all that. But I plan on pushing play real soon.”
In two NFL seasons, Wilson played in 21 games and had 115 carries for 504 yards and 5 touchdowns.
"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me," he said earlier this week. "I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too."
