The New England Patriots are quite familiar with the New York Giants, as they have faced the NFC East club more often in the preseason than any other team. New England hasn't fared well in the 30 meetings, however, losing 19 of them, including 11 of the last 16. The Patriots have lost three consecutive home exhibition games in the series but will try to end the slide when they host the Giants on Thursday in the 2022 NFL preseason opener for both clubs. New England defeated New York last year for just the third time in their last 11 preseason matchups, posting a 22-20 victory on the road.

Kickoff from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. New York is a 1.5-point favorite in the latest Giants vs. Patriots odds at Caesars Sportsbook, while the Over-Under for total points scored is 34. Why the Giants can cover

Daniel Jones hasn't become the quarterback New York was hoping for when it selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Time is running out for the 25-year-old Duke product to transform into the player the team envisioned, so he'll likely be given every opportunity to prove himself, beginning with the preseason opener. Jones, who was limited to 11 games in 2021 due to injuries, played well against the Patriots last postseason, as he completed 17-of-22 pass attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Jones will be feeling the pressure from Tyrod Taylor, who was signed to a two-year contract in March after throwing for 966 yards and five TDs while starting six games for Houston last year. The 33-year-old has started 53 of the 78 NFL contests in which he has played and enjoyed the most success with Buffalo from 2015-17, when he amassed 8,857 passing yards with 51 TDs and only 16 interceptions in 44 games. Davis Webb also figures to get some playing time Thursday, and he is familiar with new head coach Brian Daboll since they were together in Buffalo for the last three seasons while the latter served as offensive coordinator.

Why the Patriots can cover

New England will take long looks at a number of its offensive rookies, including quarterback Bailey Zappe. The 23-year-old, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, set FBS records with 5,967 yards and 62 touchdown passes with Western Kentucky last year after spending the previous three seasons at Houston Baptist. Zappe completed 69.3 percent of his FBS-leading 687 attempts and also made three scoring runs for the Hilltoppers.

Another fourth-round pick could be a factor for the Patriots on the ground, where Pierre Strong Jr. rushed for over 1,000 yards in three of his four seasons at South Dakota State and had his best year in 2021, when he ran for 1,673 along with 18 touchdowns. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton gets his first opportunity to display his blazing speed after being drafted in the second round in April. The 22-year-old from Baylor, who had 62 catches for 948 yards and 10 TDs with the Bears last season, posted the third-fastest speed in the 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL combine, finishing in 4.28 seconds.
