Greg Schiano: Darrelle Revis timeline will be 'played by ear'
Despite hearing that Darrelle Revis might play in Week 3 of the preseason, it's not a lock. Neither is Week 1 of the regular season, according to Greg Schiano.
"It's gonna have to be played by ear," Schiano told Albert Breer of the NFL Network. "There's so much talk about him and when he'll play. The reality is he'll play when he's ready to play, and if that's not Week 1, then it's not Week 1. And if it is, great. I'm not saying that flippantly. He knows. This guy is a consummate pro, the best at what he does, and he's coming off an injury that he's never had before."
So the Bucs are being extremely cautious, not even guaranteeing that he would play in Week 1. Nothing wrong with that. But Breer notes that Schiano wouldn't rule out Revis for the Week 3 preseason matchup against the Dolphins.
That's the timetable that GM Mark Dominik offered up when discussing whether Revis would play in the preseason. And it could still happen that way provided Revis can progress through the necessary
"If he just keeps going, says, 'Yeah, I wanna do this,' then we won't have to think about it as much," Schiano said. "And if he doesn't play, that doesn't mean he isn't feeling good. You just sit back and, like I said from the beginning, I don't need to see him play in the preseason. I know what he's capable of. He just needs to get to where he's confident and feels like, 'I can go out and play.'"
Schiano also added that Revis is "worth all of the attention" because of what he's capable of doing on the field. And that's also why Revis is worth waiting on. He's an absolute gamechanger, the best cornerback in football when he's healthy.
Getting him back at 100 percent is far more valuable than putting him out on the field against his old team, and certainly more valuable than giving him preseason reps.
