Jack Del Rio completely rips Sean Smith after loss

If anyone was curious exactly what frustrated head coach Jack Del Rio the most during the Oakland Raiders 30-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, I think we can now put that to rest.

On Monday, Del Rio joined "The Damon Bruce Show" on 95.7 The Game to talk about Week 5. One of the immediate and hot topics was the secondary, and specifically cornerback Sean Smith.

And per Karl Buscheck of 95.7 The Game, Del Rio didn't hold back on Smith.

“We've got to play better on defense. We've got to get off the field. We can't let somebody start the game with a 55-yard bomb over the top of us,” Del Rio said, referring to the game-opening play when Joe Flacco gashed Sean Smith for a monster completion to Mike Wallace.

“We've just got to play better and I thought that was the lion's share of what happened yesterday,” Del Rio continued. “We broke down and allowed them to move it, and score it, and possess it too much and didn't get the ball back to out offense nearly enough.”

Oh, but don't you worry, that wasn't it, either. Buscheck then quoted Del Rio stated that he "can't speak to what is going on in somebody's head to not take care of their business."

“I can't speak to the very first play of the game defensively,” Del Rio said. “I can't speak to what is going on in somebody's head to not take care of their business. Bottom line is we have to do our job and we didn't get it done right there. So, that was an ugly way to start the game.”

It's pretty surprising to see any coach just shred a player like this to the media, but Smith has struggled quite a bit. Maybe Del Rio is hoping to spark a fire under Smith entering a crucial Week 6 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
