Jack Del Rio likely Broncos interim coach, Eric Studesville in mix
Jack Del Rio's likely to be the Broncos interim head coach while John Fox is out.
Denver Broncos head coach John Fox will undergo heart-valve surgery this week the team confirmed late Saturday night. As a result Fox will miss several weeks while he recovers from that surgery. The Broncos will eventually name an interim head coach -- possibly as early as Sunday -- and the top candidate is defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
Del Rio last worked as a head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011, when he was fired as head coach after a nine-year stint running the Jags.
As defensive coordinator of the Broncos, Del Rio's seen his star rise again and has been mentioned in numerous head-coaching vacancies.
His experience, position and recent success make him a logical pick to be the Broncos interim coach while Fox is gone.
It's not a complete guarantee though: it's also possible the Broncos could tap running backs coach Eric Studesville to be the interim head coach.
Studesville was the interim head coach in 2010 after Josh McDaniels was fired.
