Jahvid Best hasn’t played since suffering his third major concussion in October 2011.
The 24-year-old Lions running back told the Baltimore Sun he feels good and is symptom-free, but he has not been cleared by neurologists and it’s unclear if he ever will. Still, Best continues to work out like he’s got a game Sunday.
"It's tough. I don't know what the future is going to hold for me," said Best, who was in Baltimore for Monday’s Ed Block Courage Awards Foundation banquet. "It's been about a year and a half now, but I'm still working out like I'm playing next week. … I am never giving up hope. I'm staying ready so if the opportunity does present itself, I'll be ready."
One of 17 players who visited abused, neglected and at-risk kids at St. Vincent's Villa, Best said he was uplifted watching the children chase around NFL stars like Adrian Peterson.
"Seeing what they go through and how they overcome adversity and tough times, it motivates you and puts your life in perspective and makes you appreciate the things you do have," Best said. "The things they went through, and they still have smiles and hopes for the future. There's something you can really take from that."
Best suffered his first concussion in 2009 at Cal. You can watch it in the video above. He suffered another in a 2011 exhibition game against Cleveland, the third on Oct. 16, 2011 against San Francisco.
Best healed from the latest concussion, according to the Lions' medical staff, but still had residual issues and was doing “brain workouts” to improve memory skills.
Teammate Nate Burleson has advised Best to "shut it down," saying he wants to see Best healthy at age 65.
