Jaworski: Kaepernick 'could be one of greatest quarterbacks ever'
Though he's started just 10 games in his career, ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski said Colin Kaepernick could be one of the best quarterbacks ever.
Ever since taking over for Alex Smith in the middle of last season and leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl (and a near victory against the Ravens), it hasn’t been difficult to paint Colin Kaepernick as a quarterback with an awfully bright future.
But ESPN’s Ron Jaworski has taken it a step further, saying Wednesday that "I truly believe Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever.”
So, there’s that, I suppose.
"I love his skill set,” Jaworski said. “I think the sky's the limit."
Yes, Kaepernick’s skill set is impressive, and he’s obviously part of a revolution of athletic, read-option type quarterbacks who might be the future of the league. With an emphasis on might.
But with an offseason to study those type of wide-open offenses, one major storyline coming into 2013 is whether the league’s defensive coordinators have figured out ways to slow down that offensive scheme.
In other words, will the read-option be the future of quarterbacking, or will it go the way of the Wildcat? Perhaps Kaepernick and his ability to adjust to the adjustments will play a big role in determining that.
As for how Kaepernick responded to Jaworski’s praise?
"I'm working," he said. "To me, it's a great honor he said that. I'm very flattered by it. But at the same time, I haven't played a full season yet."
That’s absolutely true, of course. Last season, he started seven regular-season games, going 5-2, and doing this:
… While also doing this:
So, yeah, it was a good season. But to call him potentially one of the best ever, that’s another story.
Jaws is great, but 10 starts and he sees Kaepernick being one of the greats of all-time. We need to slow that train down.— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) August 22, 2013
