Jets front office denies reported interest in cutting Mark Sanchez
The Jets denied that they have interest in cutting Mark Sanchez as was reported on Friday night.
On Friday night, the Jets drafted West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith with the 39th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, giving them an unheard of sixth quarterback on their roster. Sure seems like Geno will be the starter, but there's still the matter of Mark Sanchez standing in the way on the roster.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Friday night that the Jets "will consider releasing" Sanchez. Of course, they will -- Sanchez is owed a ton of money, but New York could move on to the Geno era much more quickly with a Band-Aid pull than they would with a year of drama surrounding the quarterback situation. Naturally, the Jets deny having interest in dumping the Sanchize.
"What this means for Mark Sanchez is competition, and Mark is open to that," GM John Idzik said Friday night at the Jets' press conference. "We’ve had discussions about that. I think he buys into the fact that that helps him. It helps any player on our team and, as a result, it helps our team. So what it means for Mark is that we’ve added competition. Just as when we signed David Garrard, we added competition."
Asked more specifically if the Jets had "plans to release" Sanchez, Idzik had a similar answer, saying that "there are plans to let him compete."
Read between the lines on that one, and it's pretty clear that they're seriously considering the idea of getting rid of Sanchez. Enjoy the circus while it lasts.
