Saturday night brought the anticipated debuts of several rookie quarterbacks. Among the first-rounders getting their first taste of live NFL action: Zach Wilson, drafted No. 2 overall by the Jets and set to open 2021 as New York's starter. While the former BYU standout didn't necessarily enter with the drama of Trevor Lawrence's "competition" in Jacksonville or finish with the play-making pizzazz of fellow top pick Trey Lance, he looked strong despite a smaller, quieter role during the Jets' first two drives of the night against the New York Giants.

Gang Green went heavy on the ground against the Giants early on Saturday, perhaps in part to help ease Wilson into the lineup. Ty Johnson and rookie Michael Carter, for example, combined for 12 carries during Wilson's only two series under center. But when the Jets asked their first-year signal-caller to make a throw, he did. Leading a field goal drive to open his debut and put the Jets up 3-0, the 22-year-old really shined his second time on the field, showcasing first-round arm talent on a third-down laser to Corey Davis.

Wilson several times made his arm strength clear, also connecting with Keelan Cole and Vyncint Smith to move the chains. Had an offensive pass interference not been called on the QB's first drive, the Jets might've ended up with more than three points, too. All in all, Wilson finished the night 6 of 9 for 63 yards but buoyed the mild stat line by passing the eye test.

After playing the Giants, the Jets will resume their 2021 preseason on Aug. 21, by visiting the Packers.
