Joe Philbin had 'never heard of Dr. Dre' before 'Straight Outta Compton'

Could Philbin be changing his spots? (USATSI)

Is Joe Philbin a changed man these days? Sure seems like it. The Dolphins head coach has always been one of the more, ahem, vanilla coaches in the NFL. But lately he's been doing weird stuff that seems to a) kind of resonate with his team and b) diverge completely from his usual boring personality.

For instance, a couple of days ago Philbin took the stage (!), wearing a white hat (!!) and rapping (!!!).

Had to repost this one! Coach Philbin was gettin it! MiamiDolphins finsup

And where does he get this kind of outfit?

“It was the one I wore in my prom in 1979," Philbin said.

And it ... somehow still fits?

"Yeah, of course, take a look," Philbin joked. "No."

This is along the same lines of bailing on practice and taking his team to see the Straight Outta Compton, the new movie about N.W.A.

Everyone knows who N.W.A. is right? I can't spell out the acronym but they're a famous rap group feauturing Ice Cube, Eazy-E and, of course, Dr. Dre. Everyone knows Dr. Dre.

Except Joe Philbin.

"God’s honest truth, I had never heard of Dr. Dre until I went to the movie," Philbin said. "I liked the history of it. I didn’t know any of that stuff. I thought it was good."

It feels nearly impossible not to know who Dr. Dre is. (I have texted my parents for comment but have not yet heard back.) Philbin is truly in a special class.

Is it possible he's pulling a Tom Coughlin here by the way? Embattled, hard-line, milquetoast coach who's job is on the line so he cuts it loose and starts winning???'s John Breech predicts the Dolphins will finally break through to the playoffs under Philbin and I'm inclined to agree with him. Ryan Tannehill is poised to make a big leap, Jarvis Landry could be a dominant pass-catching force in this offense and Ndamukong Suh could turn the defense into a dangerous unit.

If any of that happens it's just further proof we don't give coaches enough credit for being willing to evolve the same way as players.
