LaMarr Woodley halts school budget cuts with $60K donation

A number of different athletic departments in and around Saginaw, Michigan had their budgets slashed recently and as a result were moving to a pay-for-play system (it's very different from the one in New Orleans) that would require middle-school, junior high and high school students who wanted to participate in sports to pay $75 per year.

Then LaMarr Woodley stepped up. The Steelers linebacker, a Saginaw alum himself, donated a stunning $60,000 to the school district in order to cover the fees for the kids for all of 2012.

"What a blessing,” Saginaw high athletic director Dan Szatkowski said. "He did it for all the kids in Saginaw, not just Saginaw High. It’s for Arthur Hill, SASA, Willie Thompson, Arthur Eddy ... all the schools. It makes me proud to know he’s a product of Saginaw. He understands what’s going on. He knows what it means to be a Trojan."

There's bound to be people who will say that the amount Woodley donated is a drop in the bucket for the money he's made in his career, but to step up in this way for an entire community of young kids, many of whom would've probably had to give up playing sports, is just flat-out touching.

"If you know him, you know he’s not doing it to see his name in the paper,” Szatkowski said, "He’s beyond that. What a great message this sends to the kids, to the families, to the other people in the city and even the state."

It's often the bad things that athletes do -- or at least the attention-hogging things they do -- that makes the headlines. What Woodley did is definitely grabbing attention, but it's for all the right reasons.
