Lavonte David on Geno Smith penalty: 'I guess I hit him late'

Linebacker Lavonte David is one of the Buccaneers' best players, but an ill-timed lapse in judgment cost Tampa Bay a Week 1 win over the New York Jets. Moments after the Bucs scored the go-ahead field goal and with 38 seconds left on the clock, Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith scrambled down the right side before going out of bounds near the Bucs' 45 -- where he was promptly hit by David.

A 15-yard penalty later, kicker Nick Folk took the field and calmly striped a 48-yarder for the 18-17 win.

After the game, David sounded surprised that he was flagged.

Meanwhile, Rex Ryan lives to fight another week.
