Living with Colin Kaepernick means playbook quizzes while you shower
New 49ers receiver Ricardo Lockette lives with a famous person: that famous person is Colin Kaepernick. Living with your quarterback means getting quizzed on the playbook at weird times.
Lockette, who signed with San Francisco in September, is housemates with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick apparently has several unique ways of helping Lockette learn the team's playbook, including shower quizzes.
"We play Madden and Call of Duty. But when we aren't doing that, we pop quiz each other about the playbook," Lockette said, via the Albany (Ga.) Herald. "I might be in the shower, and he might walk by the bathroom and yell, 'Hey, what do you have on Colorado 750?' I will tell him a route, but if it's wrong, he will come in and throw something over the shower curtain."
Unfortunately, we may never find out what Kaepernick throws over the shower curtain because Lockette doesn't divulge that vital piece of information.
Living with your team's quarterback might mean you sometimes get things thrown at you in the shower, but it also means you're probably friends with him, which is good news for Lockette.
Lockette is one of several receivers trying to replace the injured Michael Crabtree in the 49ers' starting lineup for the upcoming season.
"I am just trying to step up. We have a couple of guys battling for Crabtree's spot," Lockette said. "My job is to make that decision easy for them, and I plan on doing that. It's a battle, and it’s going to be day to day. I think the real test will come down during preseason and who makes the most plays. There are a lot of guys who can do it during practice, but can you do it in a game?"
Lockette and Kaepernick have been friends since the 2011 NFL Combine, and that friendship might be what eventually helps Lockette earn a starting spot. "The way [Colin] breaks down plays and just working one on one with him, it's made me a different receiver," Lockette said. "It's like night and day just learning the playbook from someone you can totally relate to."
Besides receiver, Lockette also serves one other role on the team: Peacekeeper. Since signing with the 49ers, the former Seahawks receiver has found himself in the middle of what has become one of the NFL's most bitter rivalries.
"I still talk to my boys," Lockette said of his ex-Seahawk teammates. "We tweet all the time and text all the time. They come over to my house [in San Francisco] and kick it with us. Marshawn [Lynch] has come over and hung with me and Kaepernick."
