Lovie Smith calls Mike Glennon Bucs 'QB of the future'
Lovie Smith called Mike Glennon the Buccaneers 'quarterback of the future' when asked why Tampa didn't take Johnny Manziel.
Many people thought the Buccaneers might draft Johnny Manziel with the No. 7 overall pick. Instead of going quarterback, they went wide receiver, nabbing Mike Evans out of Texas A&M.
And not only weren't they going quarterback, but Bucs coach Lovie Smith said after the draft that current backup Mike Glennon -- who the Bucs were rumored to be interested in trading -- is the "quarterback of the future."
“It’s what’s best for us," Smith said. “Just talking about our quarterback position, our quarterback position is as strong as any quarterback position I’ve had when I’ve been a head coach. You know how much I like Josh McCown as our starter. I love Mike Glennon. Mike Glennon is our quarterback of the future here. So why would you want to add a third quarterback to the mix? We needed other positions. Forget just the quarterback position, we thought this was the best available player for us. It was an easy decision for us."
This is, frankly, stunning. The Bucs new regime hasn't appeared -- not once -- to be high on Glennon. Quarterback wasn't a top "need" per se, because of other concerns (like wide receiver) at this point in the draft.
But there's been no indication they liked Glennon. The No. 1 piece of evidence was their decision to sign McCown, a career backup and journeyman, and immediately name him the starter. This despite Glennon having a more than solid rookie season under Greg Schiano.
Maybe they're coming around on Glennon. Or maybe it was a gigantic smokescreen the whole time. If so, well played by the Buccaneers.
