Marc Trestman: Bears 'haven't discussed' new Jay Cutler contract
Coach Marc Trestman says the Bears 'haven't discussed' a new contract for Jay Cutler at this point in time.
INDIANAPOLIS -- In light of the way the Bears are moving with their player and front-office acquisitions, the logical conclusion is they're starting to build their roster around quarterback Jay Cutler.
The next logical step, then, would be giving Cutler, whose contract will expire after 2013, a new deal. But Bears coach Marc Trestman said at the 2013 NFL combine that they "haven't discussed" a new deal for Cutler just yet.
"I haven't discussed any of that with Jay or with Phil [Emery] up to this point," Trestman said.
It's quite possible, of course, that Cutler's representatives and Emery are speaking about a new deal for their quarterback and Trestman's just not involved in the discussion (though that would be odd).
It's also possible -- and perhaps more likely -- that Cutler and his reps have no interest in discussing a new contract right now.
Joe Flacco is about to break the bank when he lands a new contract from the Ravens, and it's going to set the market for new quarterback contracts.
Likewise, Tony Romo and the Cowboys have opened up discussions on a new contract; that'll also help set the market for a guy like Cutler (maybe even moreso, given the lack of Super Bowl victories on his resume).
Cutler will eventually get paid (again). And given that he'll "only" be 30 this April, he'll likely get paid by the Bears. The only question is when. It just doesn't sound like it'll be in the immediate future.
