Mark Sanchez expects to find out who Jets starting QB is 'soon'
Veteran Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith are battling for the Jets starting QB job. Sanchez expects Rex Ryan to make a decision any day now.
Great news for the fantasy football dorks out there eager to draft Mark Sanchez*: The former first-round pick expects coach Rex Ryan (and, we're guessing, general manager John Idzik) to announce the Jets starting quarterback any day now.
“I think we’re coming down the stretch here, so I’m sure a decision will be made here soon,” said Sanchez, according to quotes distributed by the team (by way of PFT). ”Other than that, I don’t know.”
With rookie Geno Smith sidelined with an ankle injury he suffered in the first preseason game, coupled with Sanchez's "pretty good by Sanchez's standards" performance against the Jaguars on Saturday, it's reasonable to think that the veteran has the edge. Also helping Sanchez's cause: He's Ryan's guy -- the Jets traded up to get Sanchez back in '09, Ryan's first year on the job -- though such things don't seem to matter when it comes to winning the No. 1 job in 2013
“I don’t care,” Sanchez said. ”I really don’t. I’ve competed my whole life and I’m ready to play.”
There's also this: Ryan went out of his way to say Smith had a "brutal" practice last week, something he's never said publicly about Sanchez even though you could argue that Sanchez has redefined what it means to be brutal.
By Monday, however, Ryan had only laudatory things to say about Smith.
“I think he’s much further along right now,” the coach said after practice, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “He looked like he was driving the football better, so that was good to see. He made some real nice throws down the field today, I thought.”
Smith, meanwhile, remains optimistic that he can win the starting gig.
“I just have to go out there and execute,” Smith said, “do what I’m told, do what I’m coached to do, go out there [and] run the plays to the best of my ability, make sound reads, be good with my footwork [and] just prove to the coaches and teammates that, hey, I belong here.”
Whatever happens, this is an almost certainty: If the Jets don't make a drastic turnaround this eason, not only will Sanchez be elsewhere in 2014, Ryan could be too.
* We're not sure how it's not obvious, but just in case, THIS IS A JOKE. Not even Mark Sanchez would draft Mark Sanchez on his fantasy football team.
