Last week, Michael Vick tweeted out a picture of himself and his daughter, and on the kitchen table, observant viewers saw what appears to be a box of dog biscuits.

Given Vick’s history with dogfighting, reporters asked him Wednesday if he actually owned a dog, and Vick declined comment, saying he’d rather focus on the Eagles and how they need to win games.

On Thursday, though, Vick changed his mind and admitted through his publicist that yes, he does own a dog.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet," Vick said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.

"I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”

Vick is legally allowed to own a dog, and he’s said that he doesn’t think it’s fair for his kids not to have a dog because of his past.

“Being honest. Being candid. … I still deal with my kids each and every day, and for the last three years, not being able to have a dog because of my acts. ... I just don’t think that’s fair,” Vick told CNN last July. “It may be something that’s therapeutic in that for them and I can’t take that dream away from them. That’s selfish on my behalf.”
