MJD on new GM Caldwell shooting down Tebow to Jags: 'That's big'
Maurice Jones-Drew was asked about his new general manager David Caldwell shooting down any idea that Tim Tebow would come to Jacksonville, and he said, "That's big" and "one of the greatest things I've seen at a press conference in a long time."
New Jaguars general manager David Caldwell made quite the impression during his introductory press conference on Thursday. Caldwell, only 38 years old, appeared poised, professional and capable of running the Jacksonville franchise.
He also shot down any notion of Tim Tebow ending up on the Jaguars roster, something that might not appeal to every fan, but something that should be good news for anyone who understands roster construction at the NFL level. Like, say, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew.
“That's big, especially for our quarterbacks," Jones-Drew said on Sirius XM radio Friday, via Mark Long of the Associated Press. "First question out of the mouth of a reporter is: 'What do you think about Tim Tebow?' You know, he's not on our team. You want to focus on the guys you have in your locker room. For him to come out and be direct and forward with where we're going, that's one of the greatest things I’ve seen at a press conference in a long time."
I'll second that notion, MJD. Tebow has been a mostly unwanted distraction this season and the idea that Shad Khan would saddle a new general manager with a publicity stunt like Tebow simply to sell tickets made more than a few people cringe.
Reportedly, Tebow was a sticking point with Caldwell: The GM was willing to walk away from the Jaguars job if Khan insisted that the former Gators star become part of the roster.
Whether MJD remains with the team over the long term is still up for grabs, but it should tell you about how the players in the Jaguars organization view Tebow (who, again, is on another team) and the circus that comes with him. And it should tell you why bringing him on would be an ill-fated idea, at least in Jacksonville.
Most important, it should tell you that Caldwell may very well be the stud some described him as, which likely means good things for the immediate and long-term future of the Jaguars.
