New York Jets owner backs Fitzpatrick benching

Jets owner Woody Johnson says he supports the decision of head coach Todd Bowles to start Geno Smith at quarterback this Sunday in their game against Baltimore.

“The coach made the decision,” Johnson told NFL Network. “I back him 100 percent.”

The move comes a day after Bowles said he would revisit his earlier stance on retaining Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter, despite his throwing just five touchdowns and 11 interceptions over a six game period that found the Jets claim only one victory.

Smith entered Monday’s night 28-3 loss to Arizona after Bowles benched the veteran, and looked fair early on, completing his first three pass attempts, but also nearly lost a fumble and was ultimately intercepted.

A second round pick three years ago, Smith has more career interceptions (36) than touchdowns (27) in just 32 NFL appearances.
