NFL Draft: Eagles select Lane Johnson with No. 4 pick
The early run on tackles continued with former Oklahoma left tackle Lane Johnson going fourth overall to the Eagles. He was the third tackle selected, after Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel went 1-2 to the Chiefs and Jaguars.
Capping a rapid rise fueled by his eye-popping combine performance, former Oklahoma left tackle Lane Johnson was taken by the Eagles with the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday.
Johnson is a freakish athlete who, at 6-6, 303 pounds, can execute a 360 dunk. He began his career as a skinny JUCO quarterback, transferred to Oklahoma as a tight end, and played tackle his final two seasons. He’s put on 100 pounds since enrolling at Kilgore (Tex.) College five years ago.
"We felt he was the most athletic tackle that we had seen," new Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. "We had him in, went down and worked him out privately, then had him in for a visit just a little while ago. [He has] a huge upside. He hasn’t played a ton of offensive tackle, but he has played the right side and the left side, so he does have experience at both sides."
Johnson astonished scouts with his speed at the Senior Bowl – chasing down Utah State corner Will Davis following an interception -- then his stock soared in Indianapolis.
After Johnson ran a 4.74 forty, posted a 34-inch vertical leap and did 28 reps on the bench press, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock called it the “freakiest performance” by an offensive lineman since the league began televising the combine.
The Dolphins and Saints were long rumored to have coveted Johnson, the third franchise tackle in the draft after Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher. Miami traded up to No. 3 but went with defensive end Dion Jordan instead. Thus Johnson, a CBSSports.com third-team All-American, fell to the Eagles.
Philly has Jason Peters at left tackle, so Johnson could start off at right tackle.
