NFL Draft: Falcons select Desmond Trufant with 22nd pick

NEW YORK -- Another year, another Trufant brother will join the NFL ranks. That’s because the Falcons traded up with the Rams to select former Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant with the No. 22 pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday.

Desmond has some catching up to do with older brother Marcus Trufant, who was taken No. 11 overall by the Seahawks in 2003 and is still in Seattle. But Desmond Trufant is off to a better start than Isaiah Trufant, who was undrafted and started his pro career in the AFL and UFL before catching on with the Jets.

Either way, Desmond Trufant was one of the better cornerbacks in what is a deep position in this year’s draft class. And although Dee Milliner and D.J. Hayden already have been selected, Trufant showcased the skills at the Senior Bowl, the NFL Combine and at his pro day that made Atlanta -- which was in desperate need of secondary help -- believe he can be a top-notch defensive back in the NFL.

There was still a question of whether Trufant had performed well enough to make himself a late first-round pick, but the Falcons certainly answered that question.
