NFL Draft: Patriots get C- for picking QB Jimmy Garoppolo at No. 62
The Patriots selected former Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the 62nd overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Can Jimmy Garoppolo make the big jump from FCS-school Eastern Illinois to the NFL? Actually, more importantly, can he be the guy that eventually takes over for Tom Brady? New England is about to find out.
Garoppolo will probaby enjoy playing for the Patriots because his favorite player growing up was Tom Brady. CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco is a little bit baffled by the pick.
This is a weird choice by the Patriots. They have Mallett, and Brady has some good years left. GRADE: C- http://t.co/KPxAyHqyNs— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) May 10, 2014
While the four quarterbacks above will definitely be competing for a starting job next season, Garoppolo can probably plan to spend the next two, three or four years on the bench. The biggest quarterback question in New England has nothing to do with Brady, it has to do with Ryan Mallett. Mallett's future with the Patriots is up in the air thanks to the selection of Garoppolo.
Hethrew for 5,050 yards in 2013, the second-highest total in FCS history. If Garoppolo's going to find success in the NFL, NFLDraftScout.com says that he's going to have improve his decision-making and stop trying to force throws into small windows.
Garoppolo isn't the first Eastern Illinois quarterback to get taken in the NFL Draft; that honor belongs to Jeff Christensen, who was taken by the Bengals in the fifth-round in 1983. Garoppolo will probably be hoping his career goes slightly better than Christensen's, who played in a total of four games over two seasons with Cincinnati and Cleveland.
Tony Romo also came out of Eastern Illinois, but was undrafted.
As a second-round pick Garoppolo becomes the highest-drafted player ever out of Eastern Illinois. The previous high was third-rounder Chris Watson by the Broncos in 1999.
