NFL Week 16 picks: Baltimore will cover vs. the Patriots

Carolina will have success vs. New Orleans in Charlotte. (USATSI)

Each week, we'll take the best -- and most clever -- odds collected by Bovada for the upcoming week and give our take. This is important stuff, perhaps the most important post you’ll read all week. Because if you can’t lose money while watching a game in which you have absolutely no effect, what’s the point of watching sports at all?

Note: Home team is listed first in Against the Spread.

Game One: Panthers -3.5 vs. Saints
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET, FOX

2013 Against The Spread
Overall: 8-5-1 Overall: 7-6-1
Home: 5-1-1 Home: 6-0-1
Away: 3-4 Away: 1-6
2013 Team Rankings
Pass offense: 27th Pass defense: 3rd
Rush offense: 8th Rush defense: 20th
Pass defense: 5th Pass offense: 2nd
Rush defense: 2nd Rush offense: 26th

Verdict: As I mentioned earlier this week, I like the Panthers here. Much of that has to do with how good the Panthers are at home and how bad the Saints have played at times on the road. This game will have major implications on the NFC South title. If the Saints win, they clinch the crown. If the Panthers win, they'll have to beat the Falcons in Week 17 to claim it. At this moment, I like Carolina to win its first division title since 2008.

Game Two: Ravens -2.5 vs. Patriots
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET, CBS

2013 Against The Spread
Overall: 7-6-1 Overall: 6-8
Home: 5-2 Home: 5-2
Away: 2-4-1 Away: 1-6
2013 Team Rankings
Pass offense: 19th Pass defense: 18th
Rush offense: 29th Rush defense: 30th
Pass defense: 13th Pass offense: 6th
Rush defense: 7th Rush offense: 12th

Verdict: The Ravens are in a good spot, having won four-straight games (and five out of six) and putting themselves in good position to make the postseason (and possibly even win the AFC North). The Patriots, meanwhile, haven't played great since beating the Broncos four weeks ago, having trouble knockin off the Texans and the Browns and losing to the Dolphins last week. I like the Ravens in this one, because they're peaking at the right time and because the Patriots have been faltering.

Game Three (largest spread of week): 49ers -12.5 vs. Falcons
Monday, 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN

2013 Against The Spread

Overall: 9-4-1 Overall: 5-9
Home: 4-3 Home: 3-4
Away: 5-1-1 Away: 2-5
2013 Team Rankings
Pass offense: 29th Pass defense: 24th
Rush offense: 5th Rush defense: 28th
Pass defense: 4th Pass offense: 8th
Rush defense: 6th Rush offense: 32nd

Verdict: This is a tough way for Monday Night Football to end its season -- one solid playoff contender in San Francisco playing host to one of the biggest disappointments in the league in Atlanta. All season long, I've waited for the Falcons to turn it around, and well, they just haven't done so. Traveling across the country to face a 49ers team that has won four-straight, it will get ugly for Atlanta (and for the viewers who tune in). Go with the San Francisco here.
