Panthers, Colts, Chargers reportedly interested in Hakeem Nicks
Former Giants WR Hakeem Nicks will visit with the Colts Friday, but the Panthers and Chargers are also interested in his services.
The Steve Smith era is officially over in Carolina, which means that the team is in the market for a big-play wide receiver. One such player, at least before injuries and inconsistency derailed his contract year in 2013, is former Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks.
The 2009 first-round pick is big, physical, and can take over games when he's focused, something we saw sparingly a season ago. But that doesn't mean Nicks can't return to the form that saw him catch 78 passes for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns in 2011. And the Panthers seemed convinced that he would be a nice fit in their offense.
Nicks' father even took to Instagram to announce that Hakeem was returning home (he went to UNC) to play for the Panthers. Turns out, that's not exactly true, which explains this follow-up Instagram message:
So, in addition to the Panthers, the Colts and Chargers are also in the mix.
Hakeem confirmed to ESPN's Josina Anderson that nothing was official with Carolina and that he was headed to Indy Thursday.
WR Hakeem Nicks just told me, "I'm flying to Indy tonight. The plan is to meet with the Colts tomorrow."— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 13, 2014
