Peyton Manning would like Broncos crowd to quiet down on offense
Peyton Manning would like Broncos fans to be a little quieter when he's out there doing his job on offense.
Manning, speaking to AM 850 KOA in Denver on Tuesday, said that he wouldn't be all that upset if Broncos fans toned it down a little bit when the team was on offense, especially if they were going for it on fourth down.
“When we’re on the field on offense -- I love our fans’ excitement -- but if we can just find that controlled noise level," Manning said. "I believe we are going to go for it on some fourth downs this year and maybe not cheering when we’re going for it on fourth down – wait and see and if we get it, cheer then. To me, it’s a hard thing. These fans have so much enthusiasm, but for a receivers' standpoint, you’d love to have that homefield advantage where you wouldn’t have to signal at home.”
This is such a fine line to walk and it's guaranteed to tick off a few Broncos fans. As Gregg Rosenthal pointed out at NFL.com, Manning had Colts fans "trained like prize show dogs" by the end of his tenure in Indianapolis. They knew when to be loud, when to be quiet and it was all based on what Manning was operating out on the field.
And it really is important that things are quiet when the Broncos quarterback is orchestrating his offense down the field. Manning has some ideas to make the whole "please get quieter" process a little fan-friendly too. (Of course he does.)
"I don’t know, maybe there’s a leader in each section in the stands, we’ll take some voting polls, have a campaign," Manning said. "But that’s what you want, a guy to say, fourth-and-1, they’re going for it – I don’t know if that’s possible, I don’t know how to get that message relayed, but any help we can get out there from Broncos fans, we’ll take."
My favorite part about all of this is the "joking" tone that Manning takes towards this subject. He's diplomatic like that. Coming out and telling Broncos fans to shut the hell up wouldn't sit well.
Of course how he says it doesn't really matter. The only reason he can pull this off is because he's Peyton Freaking Manning. Which is why ultimately Broncos fans will probably end up listening to him.
