Raiders coach Dennis Allen: Matt Flynn is our starting QB
In the pass-heavy NFL, the Raiders have struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position. They're hoping to remedy that in 2013.
Former Raiders owner Al Davis might have hated the term "rebuilding," but the reality is the team has been doing just that for more than a decade. There's plenty of blame to go around. But in the pass-heavy NFL, the Raiders have struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position.
They're hoping to remedy that in 2013.
In April, Oakland traded for Seattle backup quarterback Matt Flynn and shipped Carson Palmer to Arizona. They then selected Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Flynn and Wilson joined former third-rounder Terrelle Pryor on the Raiders' depth chart, and the plan was to have Flynn start while Wilson and Pryor battled for the No. 2 gig. But Wilson was so impressive in workouts this month that the Contra Costa Times' Steve Corkran wrote that the rookie, ”... [I]s on track to push Matt Flynn for the starting job right away and certainly push Pryor for the backup spot held by Matt Leinart last season.”
On Tuesday, however, coach Dennis Allen reiterated that Flynn remains his guy.
"Matt’s our starting quarterback as we go forward right now,” Allen said via Corkran, “and until the competition dictates otherwise, that’s where we’re going.”
For his part, Flynn says he's unconcerned about the competition and is instead focusing on how he can get better.
