Redskins, Seahawks or Vikings? Winfield decision should be soon
Where will veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield land? It's a close race between the Redskins, Vikings and Seahawks, Jason La Canfora reports, with a decision likely coming this weekend.
Antoine Winfield is continuing to mull his options as several teams are pursuing him -- and willing to compensate him, sources said. But there are several factors in play as he decides where to end his distinguished career. Winfield is taking his time with his decision, with Seattle, Washngton and his former team, Minnesota, all hoping to land him.
Unlike instances with other veteran players -- Dwight Freeney, John Abraham and Richard Seymour -- where the market has deteriorated as teams are not offering deals that meet the players' expected value, Winfield stands to do well once he signs.
Redskins: He had a great visit with the Redskins, which included injured quarterback Robert Griffin III flying in to meet him. Washington pulled out all the stops. With the team possibly poised for an even greater breakthrough in 2013, they are a compelling suitor.
Seahawks: Seattle has significant interest as well. The Seahawks are a Super Bowl favorite, and they already have what might be the best secondary in the NFL. Adding Winfield as an expert slot corner would be a coup for a front office that has already had a tremendous offseason.
Vikings: After unceremoniously cutting him this offseason, the Vikings, who have been a huge part of Winfield's life, have tried desperately to get him back. The team has expressed remorse for how it handled his release. Ownership has reached out to Winfield to apologize, coach Leslie Frazier continues to speak about how much he wants Winfield back and Winfield already has strong ties to the community. Closing out his career as a Viking has a unqiue appeal as well.
Winfield realizes that while he can take his time making a decision and no one is rushing him, he will need at some point to pick a team and get going with their program. Those close to him expect that decision to come this weekend.
