Report: 49ers speaking with Mike Shanahan, in-person meeting on hold

When the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh split, the 49ers replaced Harbaugh with the inexperienced Jim Tomsula. Now that the 49ers have canned Tomsula after just one season, the franchise will have its chance to hire a more proven candidate to steady a sinking ship.

According to ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini, the 49ers are talking with 20-year coach Mike Shanahan. The two sides were reportedly set to meet Wednesday, but that meeting is now on hold.

Shanahan, 63, has been out of coaching since his unsuccessful four-year stint with the Redskins ended after the 2013 season. But given Shanahan's history of success in Denver, where he won two Super Bowls with John Elway, he's always remained an intriguing coaching candidate around the league. The Dolphins are also reportedly interested in meeting with Shanahan.

And this isn't the first time he's been connected to San Francisco.

That being said, plenty of names have been linked to the 49ers' coaching vacancy, including Chip Kelly, Sean Payton, and even Mike Holmgren.
