The Dallas Cowboys are in a bad place at linebacker after losing Sean Lee for the 2014 season to a torn ACL. They're looking in-house for potential replacements, but might they take a gander at some big-name veterans?

Ed Werder of ESPN reports it's possible and names names. Specifically, the Cowboys are "evaluating all options" for replacing Lee, including former Bears superstar Brian Urlacher and former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma

Urlacher, 36 (!), retired after the 2012 season (just over a year ago actually) when the Bears declined to bring him back. He spent last season primarily working on FOX Sports 1's daily football show and Werder reports him landing in Dallas is "unlikely."

Vilma, 32, played in just a single game for the Saints in 2013 before being dumped in a cost-cutting spree by New Orleans that shipped several veterans into the maw of free agency this offseason.

Both are big names when it comes to free-agent linebackers. But there's a major question as to what they'd bring to the table from a football perspective. One game between the pair over the past year plus isn't going to do a whole lot when it comes to replacing Lee.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who worked in Chicago from 2009-2012, is the most non-tangential connection to Urlacher.

He could conceivably convince the one-time Defensive Player of the Year to return. Landing big-name veterans who won't really help on the field would be perfectly Cowboys. But the reality is Dallas won't solve their problems by chasing ghosts of the mid 2000's.
