The Browns cut ties with Johnny Manziel in March, and last month, the former first-round pick said in a statement that "I'm hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016." In the six weeks since, Manziel has been seen at various nightclubs and bars around the country, seemingly uninterested in anything beyond finding the next party, never mind trying to get his NFL career back on track.
Which brings us to last week, where Manziel spent time in New York. TMZ reported that he was seen chugging champagne behind the DJ booth at Marquee on Wednesday night, and by Thursday, the Daily Mail reported that he was partying with actor Leonardo DiCaprio at another bar.
In general, there's nothing wrong with a 23-year-old enjoying ... well, being 23. But Manziel spent 10 weeks in a treatment facility last offseason, and the only reason he's currently out of the NFL is because he couldn't control himself off the field. It's why Manziel's father said earlier this year that if his son doesn't get help he won't live to see his next birthday. It's also why TMZ reported last week that a source close to Manziel said that he is currently "in a horrible downward spiral" and that "if he continues this way for much longer he will die."
More from TMZ:
There have been multiple serious attempts to help Johnny -- with one group of close friends recently sitting him down and "confronting" him about his situation. But, as one source put it, "He flipped out and would not hear it."
CBSSports.com's John Breech has a running list of some of the things Manziel has been up to this offseason, which just reinforces the reality that returning to the NFL is the least of Manziel's concerns.
- He went to a club in Los Angeles.
- He went to another club in L.A. (He goes to a lot of clubs)
- He hired a new agent because his old one fired him.
- He went to a club in Miami.
- He went to a Chris Brown concert in Vegas.
- He went to a club in Vegas.
- He went to another club in L.A.
- He got a tattoo.
- He spent some time with Justin Bieber.
- He did $32,000 in damage to a $4.5 million house.
- He watched the NFL Draft at a bar.
- He looked surprisingly thin at a Vegas pool party.
For pretty much the entirety of Manziel's two forgettable seasons in Cleveland, whenever he made news it was for the wrong reasons. The issues were usually of the off-field variety, usually involved partying, and usually put the quarterback somewhere he shouldn't be.
The breaking point came hours before the Browns' regular-season finale. Manziel was reportedly at a Las Vegas casino, wearing a wig and sunglasses and using a fake name. In retrospect, that may be the closest Manziel ever gets to playing in the NFL again.
