Though receiver Austin Collie was cut late in the preseason by the 49ers, he’s worked out for multiple teams lately, namely the Chargers and Titans. Now, he’s employed in the NFL once again, as he signed with the Patriots and practiced Thursday, according to ESPN Boston.

Collie has been a solid receiver during his four-year career when he’s healthy. The problem is that, because of a number of scary concussions and a ruptured patella tendon last year, he hasn’t been healthy much. In the past three seasons, he’s missed a total of 22 games.

The Patriots, meanwhile, have struggled this season with their receiving corps.

Danny Amendola, signed to replace the departed Wes Welker, has been limited to one game because of a groin injury, and rookie receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson have been inconsistent. They’ve improved in recent weeks, but they’ve also been limited this week in practice because of injuries.

Collie, however, most likely is just an insurance policy for now, and it’s unclear if he’ll have any kind of impact on the Patriots offense. During the preseason, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that Collie hadn’t fully recovered from his knee injury last season.
