Report: Punter Chris Kluwe signs one-year deal with Raiders
After getting cut by the Vikings, outspoken punter Chris Kluwe reportedly has found a new job with the Raiders.
It sounds like punter Chris Kluwe -- cut earlier this month by the Vikings -- will continue to be outspoken about the issues in which he believes. Now, he’ll have to take his megaphone to the West Coast.
That’s because he has signed a one-year deal with the Raiders for the league minimum, Fox Sports’ Brendon Ayanbadejo reports. A resident of Huntington Beach, Calif., Kluwe replaces punter extraordinaire Shane Lechler, who signed an offseason free-agent deal with the Texans.
“I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe told Ayanbadejo on Wednesday (and, yes, it’s that Brendon Ayanbadejo). “Now, my family can actually come to games.”
Kluwe also gets the chance to start over after spending his entire eight-year career in Minnesota, where he averaged 44.4 yards per punt, a team record and grew in popularity because he showcased his love for fantasy games on Twitter and spoke loudly in favor of marriage equality and Ray Guy’s Hall of Fame candidacy.
But there was speculation that Kluwe hadn’t played well enough last season to overcome his team’s possible annoyance with his outspokenness. And after the Vikings drafted punter Jeff Locke in the fifth round, it appeared Kluwe’s time was up with Minnesota. Shortly after, it was, leading the state’s governor, Mark Dayton, to say, “I don't feel good about it.”
Now, Kluwe has a new gig, but he’s not going to stop speaking from the heart. More from the story:
Kluwe is focused on punting, but he says his eye is also on Proposition 8 in California. Prop 8 was passed by voters in 2008 and governs that the state only recognize marriages between a man and a woman. The law’s legality was argued before the US Supreme Court in March, with a ruling expected in June, and Kluwe is optimistic about the likely repeal of the measure. If the measure is not repealed, however, he says it will be an issue of concern that will need to be addressed.
Said Kluwe: “I’m still going to be myself socially and continue to tweet and interact with my fans.”
