Report: Rams part ways with Gregg Williams, son Blake Williams

The new year isn't off to such a great start for the Willams family. Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was suspended indefinitely last year for his role in the Saints bounty scandal and never coached in St. Louis, is out as a member of the staff, according to an ESPN report.

Williams' son, Blake, who served as the Rams' linebackers coach in 2012, also won't return.

Because Gregg Williams hasn't been reinstated by the league, his employment status remains up in the air, whether he's currently on an NFL staff or not. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Tuesday that Blake Williams is telling other coaches that he and his father are done with the Rams.

Gregg Williams was hired by longtime friend and first-year Rams coach Jeff Fisher last offseason, before the Saints bounty scandal broke.

In March 2012, days after the NFL released details of its investigation, Williams released this statement through the Rams.

“I'd like to again apologize wholeheartedly to the NFL, Coach Fisher, the entire Rams organization and all football fans for my actions,” he said at the time. ”Furthermore, I apologize to the players of the NFL for my involvement as it is not a true reflection of my values as a father or coach, nor is it reflective of the great respect I have for this game and its core principle of sportsmanship."

Fisher said in a press conference that Williams has a “passion for [football] and a passion for hard-nosed, aggressive defense” but would never “disrespect this game to the standpoint where you try to hurt somebody on purpose.”

While it's easy to understand why the Rams decided to part ways with Gregg Williams, it's less clear why his son would be out of a job a full season after the bounty scandal. Yahoo! Sports' Mike Silver explained Tuesday that it had to do with Blake's coaching style.
