Report: Ravens set to sign WR Brandon Stokley

Though receiver Brandon Stokley said he wanted to stay with the Broncos following the 2012 season, his 37th birthday in June apparently canceled out the fact that this 45-catch, 544-yard, five-touchdown season last year was his best since 2008.

But with the Ravens missing receiver Anquan Boldin and without the services of injured tight end Dennis Pitta for this season, they plan to sign Stokley to a contract, according to the Baltimore Sun.

It’d be Stokley’s second stint in Baltimore -- he spent the first four seasons of his career there from 1999-2002. But he was not one of the team’s top receivers while with the Ravens.

It was only when Stokley began catching passes from Peyton Manning with the Colts that he began to put together consistent 40-plus-catch seasons (and a career-best 68 receptions in 2004).

The reported signing tells you that the Ravens front office might not be completely confident with its receiving corps depth after Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones. While Stokley likely won’t have big-play capability, he’s still a solid possession receiver that would provide a steadying presence on the Ravens squad.
